Statistical Waveform Evaluation Method for Adaptive PAM-4 Equalization.
Abstract
Recently, multi-valued data transmission using four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) data coding has been typically adopted to alleviate the bandwidth limitation of the interconnects. This study proposes a statistical eyeopening monitor technique to evaluate the received signal quality. An adaptive coefficient setting for PAM-4 data transmission equalization is also presented. Simulation results show that PAM-4 signals can be evaluated at the receiver, relying on the folded histogram. Moreover, adaptive parameter adjustment of the equalizer circuit is possible. In addition, an equalization technique for nonlinear transmission characteristics is discussed. This paper also describes a circuit configuration with adjustable distortion compensation for each symbol and verifies its effectiveness for transmitter nonlinearity by simulation.
