Modelling dialogues in agent societies

  • Stella Heras
  • Vicente Botti
  • Vicente Julián

Besides the simpler ability to interact, open multi-agent systems must include mechanisms for their agents to reach agreements by taking into account their social context. Argumentation provides multi-agent systems with a framework that assures a rational communication, which allows agents to reach agreements when conflicts of opinion arise. In this paper, we present the dialogue protocol that agents of a case-based argumentation framework can use to interact when they engage in argumentation dialogues. The syntax and semantics of the argumentation protocol are formalised and discussed. To illustrate our proposal, we have applied the protocol in the context of a water market. By using our dialogue protocol, agents represent water users that are able to explore different water allocations and justify their views about what is the best water distribution in a certain environment.

Tasks for agent-based negotiation teams: Analysis, review, and challenges

  • Victor Sanchez-Anguix

An agent-based negotiation team is a group of interdependent agents that join together as a single negotiation party due to their shared interests in the negotiation at hand. The reasons to employ an agent-based negotiation team may vary: (i) more computation and parallelization capabilities; (ii) unite agents with different expertise and skills whose joint work makes it possible to tackle complex negotiation domains; (iii) the necessity to represent different stakeholders or different preferences in the same party (e. g. , organizations, countries, and married couple). The topic of agent-based negotiation teams has been recently introduced in multi-agent research. Therefore, it is necessary to identify good practices, challenges, and related research that may help in advancing the state-of-the-art in agent-based negotiation teams. For that reason, in this article we review the tasks to be carried out by agent-based negotiation teams. Each task is analyzed and related with current advances in different research areas. The analysis aims to identify special challenges that may arise due to the particularities of agent-based negotiation teams.

We present a MAS decision support tool, as an open and regulated virtual organization, that uses intelligent agents to manage a flexible water-right market. The application goal of this tool is to be used as a simulator to assist in decision-taking processes for policy makers. The simulator focuses on demands and, in particular, on the type of regulatory (in terms of norms selection and agents behaviour), and market mechanisms that foster an efficient use of water while also trying to prevent conflicts among parties. Technically, it contributes with a testbed to explore policy-simulation alternatives under an agreement-technology perspective, thus promoting agreements fulfillment.

An agent-based negotiation team is a group of two or more agents with their own and possibly conflicting preferences who join together as a single negotiating party because they share a common goal which is related to the negotiation. Scenarios involving negotiation teams require coordination among party members in order to reach a good agreement for all of the party members. An intra-team strategy defines what decisions are taken by the negotiation team and when and how these decisions are taken. Thus, they are tightly linked with the results obtained by the team in a negotiation process. Environmental conditions affect the performance of the different intra-team strategies in different ways. Thus, team members need to analyze their environment in order to select the most appropriate strategy according to the current conditions. In this paper, we analyze how environmental conditions affect different intra-team strategies in order to provide teams with the knowledge necessary to select the proper intra-team strategy.

Introducing Homophily to Improve Semantic Service Search in a Self-adaptive System

  • E. Del Val
  • M. Rebollo
  • Vicente Botti

Humans create efficient social structures in a self-organized way. People tend to join groups with other people with similar characteristics. This is called homophily. This pa- per proposes how homophily can be introduced in Service- Oriented Multiagent Systems (SOMAS) to create efficient self-organized structures.

Reasoning About Norm Compliance

  • Natalia Criado
  • Estefania Argente
  • Vicente Botti
  • Pablo Noriega

This paper proposes a reasoning process to allow agents to decide when and how norms should be violated or obeyed. The coherence-based reasoning mechanism proposed in this paper, allows norm aware agents to confront the norm compliance dilemma and build alternatives for such normative decisions.

Norms, to become effective, must be recognised as normsby agents. These agents must be able to accept normsbut maintaining their autonomy. In this paper, the multi-context BDI agent architecture has been extended with arecognition and a normative context in order to allow agentsto acquire norms from their environment and consider normsin their decision making processes.

Masev (MAs Software engineering EValuation framework)is an online application that allows analyzing and comparingmethods, techniques and environments for developing MAS. Moreover, Masev allows the evaluation of how these methods and tools support the development of OrganizationalMAS and Service-oriented MAS. Finally, Masev provides aquantitative comparison based on a simple metric whose parameters can be modified by the users.

In this paper, a non-mediated multi-issue bilateral bargaining model for complex utility functions is presented. Beforethe negotiation process, a genetic algorithm (GA) is used tosample one's own utility function. During the negotiationprocess, genetic operators are applied over the opponent'sand one's own proposals in order to sample new proposalsthat are interesting for both parties.

Challenges for a CBR framework for argumentation in open MAS

  • Stella Heras
  • Vicente Botti
  • Vicente Julián

Abstract Nowadays, Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) are broadening their applications to open environments, where heterogeneous agents could enter into the system, form agents’ organizations and interact. The high dynamism of open MAS gives rise to potential conflicts between agents and thus, to a need for a mechanism to reach agreements. Argumentation is a natural way of harmonizing conflicts of opinion that has been applied to many disciplines, such as Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) and MAS. Some approaches that apply CBR to manage argumentation in MAS have been proposed in the literature. These improve agents’ argumentation skills by allowing them to reason and learn from experiences. In this paper, we have reviewed these approaches and identified the current contributions of the CBR methodology in this area. As a result of this work, we have proposed several open issues that must be taken into consideration to develop a CBR framework that provides the agents of an open MAS with arguing and learning capabilities.

An execution time planner for the ARTIS agent architecture

The purpose of this paper is to present an approach for integrating new complex deliberative behaviours in a real-time agent architecture, specifically in the ARTIS agent architecture, which is specially designed for hard real-time environments. The new deliberative agent proposed remakes its plans at runtime conserving the system integrity and its real-time feature. The proposed system has been successfully tested in a robotic test environment. This environment consisted of the automated management of the internal and external mail in a department plant, where the main goal was to ease the workload of a mail-robot. The results obtained increased the flexibility and adaptability of the real-time agent while retaining the temporal restrictions.
