Formalisations of Capabilities for BDI-Agents

Abstract Intentional agent systems are increasingly being used in a wide range of complex applications. Capabilities has recently been introduced into some of these systems as a software engineering mechanism to support modularity and reusability while still allowing meta-level reasoning. This paper presents possible formalisations of capabilities within the framework of beliefs, goals and intentions and indicates how capabilities can affect agent reasoning about its intentions. We define a style of agent commitment which we refer to as a self-aware agent which allows an agent to modify its goals and intentions as its capabilities change. We also indicate which aspects of the specification of a BDI interpreter are affected by the introduction of capabilities and give some indications of additional reasoning which could be incorporated into an agent system on the basis of both the theoretical analysis and the existing implementation.

User validation in ontology alignment: functional assessment and impact

Abstract User validation is one of the challenges facing the ontology alignment community, as there are limits to the quality of the alignments produced by automated alignment algorithms. In this paper, we present a broad study on user validation of ontology alignments that encompasses three distinct but inter-related aspects: the profile of the user, the services of the alignment system, and its user interface. We discuss key issues pertaining to the alignment validation process under each of these aspects and provide an overview of how current systems address them. Finally, we use experiments from the Interactive Matching track of the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative 2015–2018 to assess the impact of errors in alignment validation, and how systems cope with them as function of their services.

Abduction Framework for Repairing Incomplete EL Ontologies: Complexity Results and Algorithms

In this paper we consider the problem of repairing missing is-a relations in ontologies. We formalize the problem as a generalized TBox abduction problem (GTAP). Based on this abduction framework, we present complexity results for the existence, relevance and necessity decision problems for the GTAP with and without some specific preference relations for ontologies that can be represented using a member of the EL family of description logics. Further, we present algorithms for finding solutions, a system as well as experiments.

A Platform to Evaluate the Technology for Service Discovery in the Semantic Web

Since the description of the Semantic Web paradigm in 2001, technology has been proposed to allow its deployment and use. However, there is not yet any large and widely deployed set of semantically annotated Web resources available. As a result, it is not possible to evaluate the use of the technology in a real environment, and several assumptions about how the Semantic Web should work are emerging. In order to further investigate these assumptions and the related technology, we propose a simulation and evaluation platform. The platform provides tools to create Semantic Web simulations using different technologies for different purposes, and to evaluate their performance. In this paper we introduce the model of the platform and describe the current implementation. The implementation facilitates the integration of technology for an essential operation on the Semantic Web, namely Semantic Web service discovery. We illustrate the use of the platform in a case study by implementing a Semantic Web where the Jade multi-agent platform provides the framework to describe the agents, and a number of existing Semantic Web technologies are embedded in agent behavior.
