Characterising Polemical Disputes

  • Christian Lemaître
  • Pablo Noriega

Abstract We want to draw attention to “polemics”, collective processes that are complex, unavoidable and not infrequently of substantial consequence in social, political and economical terms. We propose to address the topic from the perspective of agreement technologies in order to elucidate its inherent epistemic, argumentative and social coordination aspects. Our aim is to develop an analytical framework to describe the key components of actual controversies and eventually provide technological means to participate in an ongoing disputation. In this paper we take three modest steps in that direction: (i) we foray the topic and introduce some conceptual distinctions and terminology, (ii) we characterise a type of polemical dispute that we think is significant from a practical perspective and amenable to formal and computational treatment and (iii) we articulate some salient challenges we find pertinent for the agreement technologies community.

Just as conventional institutions are organisational structures for coordinating the activities of multiple interacting individuals, electronic institutions provide a computational analogue for coordinating the activities of multiple interacting software agents. In this paper, we argue that open multi-agent systems can be effectively designed and implemented as electronic institutions, for which we provide a comprehensive computational model. More specifically, the paper provides an operational semantics for electronic institutions, specifying the essential data structures, the state representation and the key operations necessary to implement them.

We specify the agent workflow structure that is the core component of such electronic institutions and particular instantiations of knowledge representation languages that support the institutional model. In so doing, we provide the first formal account of the electronic institution concept in a rigorous and unambiguous way.

Determining the Willingness to Comply With Norms

In this paper, we propose that agents make decisions about norm compliance based on three different factors: self-interest, enforcement mechanisms and internalised emotions. Different agent personalities can be defined according to the importance given to each factor.

A MAS Decision Support Tool for Water-Right Markets

We present a MAS decision support tool, as an open and regulated virtual organization, that uses intelligent agents to manage a flexible water-right market. The application goal of this tool is to be used as a simulator to assist in decision-taking processes for policy makers. The simulator focuses on demands and, in particular, on the type of regulatory (in terms of norms selection and agents behaviour), and market mechanisms that foster an efficient use of water while also trying to prevent conflicts among parties. Technically, it contributes with a testbed to explore policy-simulation alternatives under an agreement-technology perspective, thus promoting agreements fulfillment.

Reasoning About Norm Compliance

This paper proposes a reasoning process to allow agents to decide when and how norms should be violated or obeyed. The coherence-based reasoning mechanism proposed in this paper, allows norm aware agents to confront the norm compliance dilemma and build alternatives for such normative decisions.

Requesting agent participation on Electronic Institutions

  • Hector Ceballos

The Electronic Institutions (EIs) framework is designed forregulating interactions among heterogeneous agents in opensystems. In EIs, agent interactions are speech acts whoseexchange is organized as conversation protocols called scenes. Agents can participate simultaneously in multiple scenesplaying a single role in each one of them. However, at somepoint, the execution of a given scene may require the presence of an agent playing a particular role. When such anagent is missing, a deadlock may ensue unless the institution or the agents themselves can invoke the participationof an agent to play the missing role. Such functionality isnot provided in the current EI framework. We propose anextension of the framework that addresses that problem in ageneric way: the provision of an institutional agent in chargeof instantiating new agents and dispatching them to scenesthrough a participation request protocol. In this paper wemake the proposal precise and illustrate it with a use case.

In this paper we present the Electronic Institutions Development Environment (EIDE) to support the engineering of multiagent systems as Electronic Institutions. An electronic institution defines a set of rules that structure agent interactions, establishing what agents are permitted and forbidden to do, as well as the consequences of their actions. EIDE supports and facilitates all the stages of electronic institutions’ engineering, namely from the specification of an institutional rules to its execution and monitoring.

Norms are widely recognised as a means of coordinating multi-agent systems. The distributed management of norms is a challenging issue and we observe a lack of truly distributed computational realisations of normative models. In order to regulate the behaviour of autonomous agents that take part in multiple, related activities, we propose a normative model, the Normative Structure (NS), an artifact that is based on the propagation of normative positions (obligations, prohibitions, permissions), as consequences of agents' actions. Within a NS, conflicts may arise due to the dynamic nature of the MAS and the concurrency of agents' actions. However, ensuring conflict-freedom of a NS at design time is computationally intractable. We show this by formalising the notion of conflict, providing a mapping of NSs into Coloured Petri Nets and borrowing well-known theoretical results from that field. Since online conflict resolution is required, we present a tractable algorithm to be employed distributedly. We then demonstrate that this algorithm is paramount for the distributed enactment of a NS.

Engineering open environments with electronic institutions

Nowadays, with the expansion of Internet, there is a need of methodologies and software tools to ease the development of applications where distributed homogeneous entities can participate. Multiagent systems, and electronic institutions in particular, can play a main role in the development of this type of systems. Electronic institutions define the rules of the game in agent societies, by fixing what agents are permitted and forbidden to do and under what circumstances. The goal of this paper is to present EIDE, an integrated development environment for supporting the engineering of multiagent systems as electronic institutions.
