Agent-Based Evolving Societies

  • Loïs Vanhée
  • Jacques Ferber
  • Frank Dignum

This paper describes a method to build artificial societies that can dynamically expand themselves from bottom-up, in order to cope with environmental changes. This method is then applied to model the evolutions through the first stages of human societies, inspired by social science theories.

Generic architecture for multi-auv cooperation based on a multi-agent reactive organizational approach

  • Nicolas Carlési
  • Fabien Michel
  • Bruno Jouvencel
  • Jacques Ferber

Because Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) have limited perception and communication capabilities, designing efficient AUV flotillas is challenging. Existing solutions are often strongly related to (1) a specific kind of mission and (2) the nature of the considered AUVs. So, it is difficult to reuse these approaches when switching to another mission context. This paper proposes a generic multi-agent based layered architecture for designing and specifying AUV flotillas at a high level of abstraction, regardless of the AUVs characteristics and skills. To this end, an organizational model is used to ease and regulate interactions between heterogeneous AUVs and combined with a behavioral reactive approach for limiting communication.

A formal approach to MASQ

  • Razvan Dinu
  • Tiberiu Stratulat
  • Jacques Ferber

MASQ (Multi-Agent Systems based on Quadrants) is a generic meta-model that proposes an integral view of interaction in a multi-agent system. It defines four perspectivesaccording to two axes: internal/external and individual/collective. This paper identifies a set of MASQ principles and analyzes how a formal model can be built based on them. Weoutline the most important design choices that have to bemade and their impact on the architecture of the resultingmulti-agent system.

Masq: Towards an Integral Approach to Interaction

  • Tiberiu Stratulat
  • Jacques Ferber
  • John Tranier

In this paper we describe MASQ (Multi-Agent Systems based on Quadrants), a model that defines four perspectives over an agent-based interaction according to two axes: internal/external and individual/collective. With MASQ, we mainly show how to integrate the essential elements that intervene in the description of the interaction process such as agents, environments, organizations and institutions. We also discuss some methodological aspects of such an approach and show that it is possible to apply it to build practical models.
